Sunflower Family Green Mule Ears March-June Open Woodlands |
Asteraceae Wyethia glabra "For Captain Nathaniel Wyeth" "Leaves with few or no hairs" |
This plant is in the sunflower family. The Native Americans used its seeds for food. The leaves of this plant do look very much like the ears of a mule. This is one of the largest flowers in the park with blooms as much as 4" across. A large plant grows on the far bank of Coyote Creek near the upper campground at Poverty Flat. Several others grow in Madrone Soda Springs Canyon.
