This wild pansy is one of the commonest of our spring wild
flowers. It can be found in any grassland along Pine Ridge as well as most
other grassy areas in the park. The flowers are 3/4"-wide and stand on
a 3" stalk. Another close relative, Douglas's violet, Viola douglasii,
is found just above the east fork of the Coyote Creek south of Rock House
Canyon, near Frog Lake and along the Manzanita Point Road just past the
Poverty Flat Road junction. The flower is similar but the leaves are finely
divided rather than the single oval leaves in V. pedunculata. Another
similar violet, oak violet (V. purpurea
ssp. quercetorum) is also found on Pine Ridge, generally East and
North of the top of the ridge line.
