Virgate Tarweed

June-Nov

Open Grasslands

Asteraceae

Holocarpha virgata

"Greek for wholly chaffy"

"Willow-like, twiggy"

This is one of the late summer and fall flowers. Another common name is well earned - sticky tarweed. Like all tarweeds, it has a strong tar-like odor. Large grass areas of the park take on a yellow glow from this plant in late summer. The 1/2" flowers stand on a 1-4' stalk. Look on the eastern slopes of Blue Ridge.
