Saxifrage Family California Saxifrage February-April Shady Woodlands |
Saxifragaceae Saxifraga californica " 'Rock' and 'break' for its rock-growing habit" "Of California" |
The flowers are unusually pretty with dark red anthers on top of the white petals. They are found in shady areas, often on steep banks and rocky areas. The leaves usually go unnoticed in the surrounding grass. The flower stalk stands about a foot tall with small 1/4" blossoms.
This saxifrage is not too common in the park, and it is so small it is difficult to find. There are usually several along the upper end of the Fish Trail and in shaded grassy areas along the Hobbs Road near the monument on Pine Ridge. Another location is Alter Flat, a small meadow near Fish Trail just west of the Little Fork crossing.
