Chaparral

Cucurbitaceae

Marah fabaceus

"Latin: Bitter for the taste of all parts"

"Resembling faba, the old name for the broad bean"

The wild cucumber grows as a vine on shrubby plants in chaparral areas. The China Hole Trail has many. The small white flower is less noticeable than the tennis ball sized fruit with rubbery spines.
