Bitterroot

April-June

Open Grasslands

Portulacacaea

Lewisia rediviva

"Captain Lewis of the Lewis & Clark Expedition"

"Living again"

It is not surprising that bitterroot is the state flower of Montana. It was discovered by the Lewis and Clark expedition while passing through the area destined to become the state. Its roots are edible and have been used by the Native Americans for food. As the name indicates, its roots are bitter but cooking removes some of the bitter taste. The plant is small with succulent leaves looking like little green sausages. The flowers are as big as the whole plant with several blooms 1-2" across.

This plant has been found at only two locations, Miller's Field, and on the Thomas addition.
