Lily Family Fairy Lanterns April-June Shady Areas |
Liliaceae Calochortus albus "Beautiful flowers and grass-like leaves" "White flowers" |
The white dangling flowers give this plant its name. It is also called white globe lily and is related to the mariposa lilies. The distinctive foot-long leaves drape down the banks where globe lilies grow. The 3/4"-wide flowers are on the top of a 6-12" stalk looking like little street lamp globes.
Fairy lanterns are common in the park with many growing in Soda Spring Canyon downstream from the hotel site. They also grow along the Corral Trail and alongside the trail from Poverty Flat to China Hole.
