California Gooseberry

January-March

North Exposures

Grossulariaceae

Ribes californicum

"Ancient Arabic name"

"Of California"

The berries are edible and have been used in many ways: dried, fresh and commonly made into jelly. The plant may be a large bush, 3-4' high. The small 1/2" flowers hang down at the end of branches. A less common but more noticeable species is Ribes speciosum - Fuchsia-flowered gooseberry.

California gooseberry grows in shady areas in many locations such as the Fish Trail and at other scattered locations such as the trails at the end of Manzanita Point.
