Purslane Family Red Maids February-June Open Grasslands |
Portulacaceae Calandrinia ciliata "Early Swiss botanist" "The sepals having hairy edges" |
Beautiful red-purple petals give this plant its name. The plant is edible raw and is good in salads. The Indians ground the seeds to make pinole.
Many of these plants grow at the edge of the grass along the road to Manzanita Point. Look for a ground-hugging plant about 6" across with 1/4 - 1/2" flowers.
