Vinegar Weed

June-Oct

Open Grasslands

Lamiaceae

Trichostema lanceolatum

"Greek: Hair, stamen"

"Lance-like leaves"

This is a common plant of open grasslands. It only really begins to grow in late spring, blooming throughout the summer. Once in a trail-clearing party, a large patch of vinegar weed was cut up by a gasoline-powered weed eater, providing a pungent reminder of how the plant got its common name. The small blue flower, on close inspection, is unusual and well worth the getting down to the ground to see it. Look for a small plant 3-6" tall. The 3/8"-tall flowers are near the top of the stem.
