The plants of this genus are also called snake root because of their supposed healing properties for snake bite. Purple sanicle is the most common of the sanicles. It is found in shady locations and occasionally in open grassland. Another species, yellow sanicle, S. crassicaulis is also found within the park.

Purple sanicle can be found near the road to Frog Lake and the Flat Frog Trail beneath the oaks and manzanitas. The plant is 3-5" across with the flowers rising on 2-4" stems from the center of the plant.
