Scrophulariaceae Mimulus douglasii "Comic actor for 'the grinning flowers' " "David Douglas, an early botanist" |
This small, somewhat rare plant is the perfect example of a "belly flower". It is only a couple of inches tall and has 1-3 blooms, each a half inch across, almost dwarfing the tiny plant producing them. The purple petals grade to red and yellow in the throat of the flower making it one of the most beautiful flowers in Coe Park. It sometimes does not grow and bloom for several years, and when conditions are just right it is almost common in its favorite places. One of these places is along the Corral Trail up hill from the trail in a rocky area, just before the bench. Another is near the road at Camp 7 on Manzanita Point.
