Iris Family Ground Iris April-June Shady Grasslands |
Iridaceae Iris macrosiphon "Greek for rainbow for the many flower colors" "Greek - large tube, referring to the long perianth" |
It is always a treat to find this flower. It is one of the most striking flowers in the park. As the flower stem is quite short, the flower is found near the ground among the grasses. The 2-3" purple flower stands out even though it is at ground level. The plant itself is hard to spot in the grass with its narrow leaves about 2-4" long.
It is common along Pine Ridge and at Manzanita Point. The grassy meadows along Springs Trail have large areas of ground iris in good years.
