Blue Dicks

February-March

Open Grasslands

Liliaceae

Dichelostemma capitatum

"Greek: toothed crown, from the stamen appendages"

"Head, referring to tightly-clustered flowers"

The violet blue flowers are quite noticeable in the open grasslands. The flowers grow at the end of a long stalk about 1 1/2 - 2 feet tall in a tighter cluster than Ithuriel's spear (Triteleia laxa). The flower cluster will be about 3/4" across. Other common names for blue dicks are wild hyacinth and common brodiaea.

Blue dicks are common near the corral and on the road above Frog Lake and along Flat Frog trail.
