California Poppy

March-October

Open Grasslands

Papaveraceae

Eschscholzia californica

"German physician: Eschscholz"

"Of California"

This plant is the state flower of California. In earlier years it colored vast areas of California hillsides bright orange. California poppy is one of the few orange-colored flowers. The 1 1/2 - 2" flower stands above the plant's finely divided leaves on a 6" stalk. On cloudy days, the flowers will close to reopen when the sun comes out.

It can be found in most open grasslands in the park, especially near the old hotel site at Madrone Soda Springs and the road to Manzanita Point.
