Primrose Family

Scarlet Pimpernel

March-July

Open Grasslands

Primulaceae

Anagallis arvensis

"Ana - again. Agallein - to delight for the flowers opening in sunlight"

"Pertaining to cultivated fields"

Scarlet pimpernel has also been called poor man's weatherglass because the open petals supposedly predict clear weather while closed petals predict rain. The petals will close when the sun is obscured by clouds, opening again when the sun emerges. The plant grows low to the ground with stems 3-5" long. The 1/4" flowers are along the stems.

Scarlet pimpernel is found in the grass along the Corral Trail and the road to Manzanita Point.
