This is an ongoing project between myself, Bob Patrie and Bill Levey. Bill's maps of the southern part of Coe State Park inspired us to do a more complete map of the park. Bob provided the specialized GPS equipment - a Trimble GeoExplorer II, data processing expertise, and willingness to take himself and us to wherever we needed to take map data. I am having lots of fun going along for the ride.
Our eventual goal is make accurate maps of the parks trails, roads and features, and to make these available to the park users. Bill Levey has used this data make outstanding maps of Coe State Park. These are available at his web site.
When the "Selective Avability" feature was turned off recently, it became
possible for anyone with an inexpensive GPS receiver and the right software
to make accurate maps. The second link below points to data we have collected
that anyone can upload into a Garmin GPS receiver. With this you can make
a map of a planned trip by loading trail and road tracks into the GPS receiver.
Keep in mind the limits of 1024 track points a Garmin GPS receiver can
hold.
As you upload track logs to Waypoint+ you can monitor the total number
in all loaded track logs. When you have all the ones you want, then transfer
them to the Garmin GPS receiver from Waypoint+. Some suggestions for the
complicated process of getting track logs into a Garmin GPS receiver are
in these download instructions.
The tool I have used to upload data to and from a Garmin GPS receiver
is Waypoint+. This is
currently the only way to upload track logs to a Garmin. You will
also need a cable to connect your Garmin to a PC. This is available from
Garmin.
The most usefull tool used to make maps and upload data to and from a Garmin
is TOPO!GPS.
